Here at the Strategist UK, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)
And while we’ve written about home essentials before — including the best towels and the best board games — here, we’ve rounded up the best office chairs, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.
Best-rated overall office chair
With 2,302 reviews, 78 percent of which are five stars, this chair by Intimate WM Hart, a company specialising in gaming and office chairs, is the best-rated overall. It was described as comfortable by 60 reviewers, including one father who bought it for his teenage son as well as a 60-year-old who wanted a comfy chair for his home office. Many wrote that the padded cushions and high back made it great for prolonged use; one customer said they could work up to ten hours a day from home without getting a sore back. Another noted that the arms could be removed for broader customers or to help it fit into narrow spaces. It has an adjustable height and a 360-degree swivel, too. [Editor’s note: There is an additional charge of £4.99 for shipping.]
Best-rated (less expensive) overall office chair
A less expensive chair, like this model from Office Hippo, is still highly rated while being more affordable. It costs just £36 for the height-adjustable model, and has 520 reviews on Amazon, including 73 customers writing how impressive it was given the low price. Many of the reviews did mention it proving popular for short-term use — such as the 83-year-old grandmother who has it at her sewing station, to the mother who said it’s great for her 9 year-old to sit at to do her homework. For a simple chair, it’s naturally easy to put together, too, according to 62 reviewers, who say it takes as little as ten minutes to assemble.
Best-rated office chair with high back
With 2,168 reviews, 66 percent of which are five stars, this executive chair by Cherry Tree Furniture is the best-rated high-backed chair. It comes with extra padding up the back, which 66 reviewers said made the chair extra comfy, and 79 people cited the easy adjustment on the back and height as major selling points. In total, 165 people said it was a great office chair option, with a further 55 people saying it was a great chair for gaming in, too. [Editor’s note: There is an additional charge of £9.99 for shipping.]
Best-rated office chair with lumbar support
This chair by GT Omega has a couple of distinctions: It has the highest number of five star reviews (78 percent, from 894 reviews in total) and also the highest average score, with 4.6 out of 5. This is largely due to its orthopedic design, including a lumbar-support cushion and head rest pillow (both of which are removable). Forty-eight reviewers spoke highly of the back support, many of whom had underlying back problems from sitting at poorly designed chairs. One person said the chair’s features, including the “body-hugging” shape of the back support, meant it forces you to sit properly, which in turn reduces strain on the back.
Best-rated office chair with no arms
This office chair comes with no arms, but though it may not offer the same support, it still came highly rated; it has 1,899 reviews in total, with 64 percent of those being five stars. Though it is described as an office chair, 31 of the reviews were from parents who got it for their children due to its neater size. One parent says she wishes she’d bought it years ago, and the different colour options (including purple, green, and blue) proved popular with 20 customers. However, it’s still a popular choice among adults, too, as 11 customers ordered this chair for working at and recommended them.
Best-rated stylish office chair
Many people say they bought this chair by SixBros because it didn’t look like an office chair. One reviewer likened the minimalist look to something from a Scandanavian brand, while another commented that it doubled up as a chair for the bedroom. It has 567 reviews in total, with 68 percent of those being five stars. One clever feature is the fabric cover, which according to one customer hides the screws and keeps the whole thing looking neat.
Some other Strategist-recommended office chairs
Animator (and Strategist contributor) Natalya Lobanova recommends the Reis wheely chair from Wayfair. “The main appeal (aside from the fun orange colour) is how small and compact it is while still being on wheels,” she says. “It’s comfortable, and the lack of armrests is actually super-useful.”
We also found this similar-looking model on Amazon.
Author Laura Jane Williams bought six of these chairs after seeing them on the Instagram Stories of a friend. She wrote that they “are both a focal point in my living room and fit in seamlessly with the rest of my Ikea–meets–Soho House vibe.”
