Here at the Strategist UK, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)

And while we’ve written about lots of women’s boots on our US website — including the best women’s rain boots, the best women’s Chelsea boots, and the best women’s ankle boots — here, we’ve rounded up the best wellies for women, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.co.uk.

Best-rated women’s wellies

Aigle PARCOURS 2 ISO, Unisex Adults’ Wellington Boots
From £138

Although these wellies are technically unisex, they are much-loved among female customers and have almost 1000 five-star reviews. One of those reviews is a 16-line rhyming poem about, well, Aigle wellies. Many reviewers researched the wellies heavily before committing, as they’re expensive, but dozens insist that they’re worth the money. They shout out the good grip, adjustable width, and neoprene lining as key comfort points. One reviewer claims to wear them for daily 12-hour shifts on a dairy farm, and another wore them for five days in a row at a particularly muddy Glastonbury festival. Amongst a thousand reviews, 20 customers compare these boots to the famed green Hunter wellies — 18 of them give Aigle the edge.

Best-rated (less expensive) women’s wellies

From £8

These wellies are also unisex, and, like the Aigles, they’ve established a dedicated female fan base. Though these boots have a no-frills, unlined design, 20 reviewers say they’re the best wellies they’ve ever bought. Nearly 50 customers note that you can deck them out with insoles, liners, or just a thick pair of socks. Other reviews mention that these wellies have a good-quality sole, and 20 people specifically praise the deep tread. For these customers, the good grip makes these boots great for dog walking, gardening, and festivals. Apparently, the wellies’ wide opening also sets them apart: One reviewer says she no longer needs to faff about tucking in her trousers, and the boots are easy to kick off. (These features are particularly appreciated by women with wider calves or buyers with limited mobility.) If you decide to buy, however, watch out for these wellies’ sizing: The boots go down to a UK size 4, but reviewers remind readers that they follow a men’s sizing chart.

And now for some micro-picks for every type of wellington boot you might be looking for.

Best women’s patterned wellies

From £22

These patterned wellies are a hit with people of all ages, but they seem to especially enchant grannies. One gran writes that her grandchildren specifically ask her to put her bumblebee pair on when they visit. The ankle-height wellies come in a variety of quirky patterns, from coloured gingham to sausage dogs in turtlenecks. According to reviewers, they’re easy to slip on and off, making them a popular pick for gardening and casual use. A dozen people say that these boots were a present for (or from) a loved one. Several women add that these wellies are suitable for feet and legs of all sizes, due to their generous fit and low height. That said, you can also find these Joules wellies in a mid-calf and knee-high version. Those models come in additional patterns and are similarly well loved by Amazon.co.uk customers.

Best women’s insulated wellies

From £59

For 20 individual reviewers, these neoprene wellies are the perfect fit, with commenters saying they fit true to size with no rubbing. They’re also insulated down to -30°C. Although a handful of reviewers query the Muck Boots’ lifespan, more than 500 customers praise these wellies. Most compliments are for the waterproof build, cushioned sole, and warm but lightweight lining — particularly in sub-zero conditions. For one customer, they are versatile and reliable, taking in dog walking, horse riding, and more. A handful of buyers say that, before these boots, they had never liked wellies nor found the right pair. But as one woman comments, now she’s a Muck Boots convert. As an added bonus, 20 customers say that the boots are smart to look at and come in a great range of colours.

Best lightweight women’s wellies with removable lining

These wellies, which have a removable and washable lining, are very popular among reviewers as a lightweight boot option. They’re so lightweight, in fact, that one five-star reviewer thought that they had received an empty box. Another customer says that this reduced weight has helped with foot pain from plantar fasciitis. Weight aside, customers also praise the boots’ socklike liners. (More than 20 people call them warm, and they’re easy to pop in the wash.) Apparently, these liners are comfortable enough to be multipurpose: One reviewer reports that her daughter, after walking the dog, kept the liners on indoors as slippers. But it’s the deep tread that has won over 15 other customers. To many customers’ pleasure, these boots also come in a variety of bright colours.

Best women’s wellies for work

Muck Boots Unisex Adults’ Chore High Work Wellingtons
From £100

These wellies come with a reinforced toe, heel, and a steel shank for arch support, features which are likely why several buyers call them the best boot for work. Like the Muck Boots above, customers say that they chose this boot for its flexible and comfortable fit. (This was especially emphasised by women with wider calves.) Ten reviewers praise the boots as durable, while 50 say that the wellies keep their feet warm and dry in all weather. This includes customers who use them on farms, fishing boats, or construction sites. According to one buyer, the boots’ reinforced upper makes them tough enough to wear in their horse stables, where horses commonly tread on their feet.

Best women’s zip-up/velcro wellies

From £29

These padded winter boots have a wellies-style base, but they add a zip closure and Velcro fastening strap. Reviewers note that the zipper gives a snug fit, and the Velcro avoids welly wobble around the calf. Whether they are dog-walking, gardening, or hosing the car down, the majority of reviewers agree that these boots keep them warm and dry through wet activities. And one customer claims that the boots are even suitable for driving. But ultimately, for dozens of buyers, it’s the warmth that sets these boots apart, as these come with a cosy fur lining.

Best women’s wellies for warmer weather

These wellies come from the same line as our best-rated pick but are intended for warmer weather. They claim to be quick to dry and have a thinner lining — and that’s a claim many buyers back up. Several others praise the boots’ versatility and lifespan, including one reviewer who writes that they wear the wellies daily, when doing chores on the farm to taking long walks. Overall, customers score these wellies highly for comfort, grip, and durability. And though they look sturdy, several reviewers say the boots are surprisingly light. This style of Aigles is also particularly well loved among reviewers with wider calves.
