Here at the Strategist UK, we like to think of ourselves as obsessive (in the best way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)

While we’ve written about all kinds of essentials before — including the best coffee makers, the best pens, and the best chef’s knives — here, we’ve rounded up the best dog halloween costumes, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.co.uk.

Best-rated overall dog Halloween costume

In total, 72 percent of reviewers gave this costume five stars. The costume comes in sizes ranging from S to XL, though the fit will depend entirely on the dog breed. One customer said the XL fit their small Dalmatian perfectly (others said this size was best for “tall, skinny” dogs such as lurchers or Patterdale terriers). The large fit a young Labradoodle well, while the medium was deemed perfect for a pug. According to one reviewer who bought the costume for their terrier ahead of a sci-fi film festival in London, the fabric and the fit were comfortable on their dog, and it was easy to put on (they even ended up winning a prize for best-dressed). Another customer who bought it in small for their King Charles Spaniel said it made trick-or-treating with his young nephew particularly entertaining. [Editor’s note: this product is low in stock.]

And now for some micro-picks for every type of dog Halloween costume you might be looking for

Best Freddie Kruger costume

Freddy Krueger Halloween Dog Costume
£25
£25

This Nightmare on Elm Street costume has 76 percent five-star reviews, and also comes in sizes S to XL. It consists of a hat, sweatshirt, and claw, and uses velcro to attach under the stomach, which hides the seams, according to one customer. It also came recommended by the owner of a Jack Russell mix who said that while it was a lot to pay for an outfit, it was money well spent. One customer said the claw attachment came off easily (not helped by her dog being fond of chewing) but that the overall outfit went down well at her dog’s day-care Halloween party. Similarly, the slashes in the jumper may be bothersome to some dogs — one of the few unhappy customers said her pup simply ripped this up while wearing it.

Best Ghostbusters costume

Another option for an instantly recognisable costume is this Ghostbuster outfit. Many customers said the sizing was a little tight compared with other costumes on the market (in fact, one owner of a Labrador said she had to cut bigger armholes for her dog), but the overall look made it very popular. Forty-five customers wrote about the inflatable backpack, though only 23 of these were positive reviews (three stars or higher). Commenters note the looseness of the backpack, though several used superglue to attach it to the shirt itself. The owner of one terrier said they were shocked at how much their dog enjoyed wearing the outfit, while another said their dog enjoyed it so much they used it as a makeshift “thunder blanket” when it got noisy outside.

Best Superman dog costume

From £19

This Superman costume, which includes a cap, front bib, and utility belt, has 68 percent five-star reviews. Customers said the sizing was straightforward, with most people correctly guessing their dog’s size (for example, XL fits a husky, and large fits a Border collie). The owner of a beagle said that despite the different parts, it was easy to attach, and didn’t come loose or bother his dog (in fact they went to a carnival together and he didn’t try to take it off once). Another said their dog got lots of compliments when they wore it out.

Best Jedi Costume

Disney Star Wars Jedi Robe Pet Costume
£70
£70

Sixty-eight percent of the reviews for this Star Wars Jedi outfit are five stars. Rubie’s says the small size would suit breeds including Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Australian terriers, Yorkshire terriers, and toy poodles (but it also provides a size chart depending on breed). Thirty-seven customers said they loved this costume, with many saying the looser design made it easy to put on their dogs (even if several didn’t enjoy having the hood up). The medium size caused some problems with the small ear holes, according to the owner of a cocker spaniel, but breeds with smaller ears seemed to fit in them just fine. Twenty-three reviewers said it was the most adorable outfit they’d bought their pet.

Best Batman costume

Official Batman Dog Costume
£10
£10

In total, 63 percent of reviewers gave this outfit five stars. Twenty-three reviewers said this outfit was “perfect” for their dog — happy customers included a six-year-old Shiba Inu, a German shepherd, and a golden retriever. A number of reviewers also said that it was easy to put on their pet — including the owner of a schnauzer, who said it was hard finding an outfit that fit his chest and waist equally well. The costume uses drawstrings so even if the outfit comes up a little small — as was the case with one Great Dane, who was too big even for the XL size — it can be loosened to fit. This also meant it was great for growing puppies — one reviewer bought this when their husky was still growing and says it’s easy to adjust each year.

Best cowboy costume

Cowboy Rider Dog Outfit
£13
£13

Dog owners wrote that this “low maintenance” outfit was a lot easier to get on and off their pets than those involving sleeves or hoods. And though it was popular for Halloween, one customer bought it just so her dog could entertain her during lockdown. Overall, reviewers were impressed with the Velcro, which stayed in place even when the dogs tried dislodging the cowboy on their back.

Best lion mane

This furry hood is a simpler outfit than most, but came highly recommended by customers. Sixteen reviewers said it was a great alternative to a full costume, which many dogs find uncomfortable or irritating. The outfit was most popular with larger dogs (there were 11 reviews by Labrador owners, although boxers and cockapoos also seemed to enjoy it), and the hidden drawstrings mean this can be adjusted for smaller breeds — 17 reviewers were impressed at how well it fitted their dogs.
